Four men ordained to the priesthood in St. Catharines

by Fr. Michael Basche

Bishop Gerard Bergie ordained four young men to the priesthood at a special Mass celebrated at St. Alfred, St. Catharines, Saturday May 21, 2016. Ronald Angervil, Steven Innamorati, Trevor Plug and Gregory Schmidt represent the largest group of seminarians to receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders here since 1988.

During his homily Bishop Bergie explained the significance of various parts of the Rite of Ordination to the large crowd gathered for the celebration. When the seminarians lie prostrate on the floor as the Litany of the Saints is sung, they show their willingness to follow Christ’s message “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John. 10:11)

When the seminarians place their hands on the patent and chalice with Bishop Bergie they not only make the commitment to offer the sacrifice of the Mass but offer their lives as part of the sacrifice.

As part of the Rite of Ordination, each seminarian renewed his promise of obedience to Bishop Bergie and his successors that was first made when he became a deacon. Following the Litany of the Saints, Bishop Bergie read an instruction on the responsibilities and meaning of the priesthood to the deacons. He then laid his hands upon each deacon’s head followed by Bishop O’Mara and all the other priests present. Bishop Bergie offered the prayer that calls upon the Holy Spirit to empower them. Each deacon was then vested with a chasuble and stole, had his hands anointed with sacred chrism, then placed his hands with the bishop’s on the chalice and patent. Upon the completion of this part of the rite, congratulations were offered and a Sign of Peace was exchanged with all the bishops and priests present.

The four newly ordained priests were then invited into the sanctuary for the remainder of the Mass and were among those who distributed the Eucharist. Following Mass, they remained in the church for pictures and offered individual blessings to members of the congregation.

The new priests will begin their first pastoral assignment effective June 30, 2016. Fr. Ron Angervil is assigned to St. Joseph, Grimsby; Fr. Stephen Innamorati is assigned to St. Julia, St. Catharines; Fr. Trevor Plug is assigned to St. Alfred, St. Catharines; Fr. Gregory Schmidt is assigned to St. Thomas More, Niagara Falls.
