Year of the Rosary: Pray for World Peace

As we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, I am initiating the Year of the Rosary for our diocese from January 1, 2017 to January 1, 2018.

Our intention will be to pray for world peace. I ask that we focus on praying the Rosary as individuals, parishes, schools, and families. Let us ensure that everyone has a rosary and knows this prayer. On October 13, 1917, the Lady revealed her identity: “I am Our Lady of the Rosary. I have come to exhort the faithful to change their lives and to stop offending the Lord by their sins.” She also said: “Pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace in the world and the end of war.”

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Pastoral Letter on the Year of The Rosary

I have initiated a Year of the Rosary in our diocese. I am asking that throughout 2017 we pray for peace in our world with a specific focus on Our Blessed Mother and the Rosary. Let us deepen our love for Mary and make the commitment to pray the Rosary every day. We do this as individuals; however, it has been a long-standing tradition in the Church to also pray the Rosary as a family. Let us promote the Rosary in our parishes, schools, and homes. “Living with the Rosary” booklets will be made available to all parishes to assist with this prayer. I also suggest reading a classic book by St. Louis de Montfort, The Secret of the Rosary.

Two special events are planned for the Diocese, one in the Spring and the other in the Fall. Dr. Josephine Lombardi will be giving a presentation on Our Blessed Mother and the Rosary in the Spring and there will be a diocesan gathering in the Fall to celebrate the Centenary of the Fatima Apparitions. More details will follow in the coming weeks.

The heart of the Fatima message is repentance and prayer. As we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, I invite you to join me in praying for peace in the world by celebrating the Year of the Rosary. Let us turn away from sin and division and embrace the message of peace. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us.
